Specifically, COSCO has acquired VTG Tanktainer’s 50% equity interest in Shanghai COSCO VTG Tanktainer Co., Ltd.—a joint venture established to serve the specialised tank container market—thereby assuming sole control of the entity, which has been rebranded as Shanghai COSCO Shipping Tanktainer Co., Ltd.  

This transaction underscores COSCO’s strengthened strategic focus on tank container logistics—a high-value, technically demanding segment within global freight transportation that supports critical industries including chemicals, liquid foodstuffs, and hazardous bulk commodities. Industry analysts note that full ownership enhances operational autonomy, enables standardisation of service protocols and equipment specifications, and facilitates accelerated capital allocation toward fleet modernisation, terminal infrastructure, and digitalised asset management systems.
