South Korea plans to make hydrogen the power source for all Incheon Airport buses by 2030

The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that it plans to have all 450 shuttle buses operating between Incheon Airport and Seoul powered by clean energy by 2030.

Currently, all 450 airport buses are diesel-powered. Airport shuttle buses are said to travel an average about 550 km/day - twice a day from the airport to their final destination - twice as much as city buses, that means they emit 30 times more carbon than a car in Seoul.

In the City plan of Seoul, two-thirds of existing airport shuttles will be replaced with hydrogen-powered buses by 2026, and all by 2030. The plan is in line with the ongoing green transition of the city's buses. By 2026, 1,300 buses, including airport shuttles and city buses, will be hydrogen-powered. By 2011, all 7,400 city buses in Seoul were converted to CNG buses. Furthermore, about 830 buses were replaced with electric buses and 27 buses are now running on hydrogen.

In addition, hydrogen refueling stations will be built in five public bus garages in Seoul, one of which was established in Gangseo-gu district last year. Seoul currently has 13 hydrogen refueling stations across the city. The city of Seoul signed non-binding agreements on this matter with the Ministry of Environment, liquefied hydrogen supplier SK E&S, automaker Hyundai Motor and mobility services company Tmap Mobility. Those agreements are in line with the Seoul metropolitan government's plan to promote the use of green energy, as transportation generates nearly 20 percent of greenhouse gas emissions.

Seoul encourages public transportation operators and residents to use renewable energy vehicles. In 2020, Seoul announced its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050.
