Mr. Pu Chungan expressed his views on the holding of the "Hydrogen Station Design Standards" (Revised Draft for Comments) webinar conducted by the Committee of 100 in 2023, including the handling of gas product manufacturing companies' relocation from the fine chemical industry and participation in the review of "Research on the Matching of Heavy Vehicles and On-board Hydrogen Storage and Supply Systems," a total of fifteen review tasks were highly praised and fully affirmed. At the same time, the work of the 2024 Meeting of Committee of 100 was arranged and deployed. He pointed out that in recent years, hydrogen energy technology has developed rapidly, the hydrogen energy industry chain has been continuously improved, and application scenarios have been continuously enriched, making positive contributions to reducing carbon emissions, driving economic growth, and improving national energy security. By the end of 2023, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hebei, Henan and other cities have released demonstration city clusters, which have played a positive leading role. It is reported that China's hydrogen energy industry in the carbon peak carbon neutral goal in the ascendant, has now entered a window of rapid development, and has become the industry recognized as one of the important carriers of the development of energy transformation, carbon peak carbon neutral goal to achieve a positive supporting role. Mr. Hao Zhengrong made a presentation on "The latest development status and trend of fuel cell vehicles in China". The report discussed three aspects, including the industry overview, Sinohytec 's practice and exploration, and the outlook of hydrogen energy industry development. Mr. Hao said that China's hydrogen energy and fuel cell industry has gone through three stages: technology exploration, technology application demonstration and commercialization, of which, technology exploration has determined the hydrogen-electric hybrid technology route; technology demonstration mainly solves the basic performance of the products and fosters the independent industrial chain; and the performance of the products in the commercialization stage will meet the market demand on a large scale and optimize the independent industrial chain. Mr. Hao pointed out that: the development of hydrogen energy has become a global consensus, all countries take hydrogen transportation as an entry point, diversified development in the field of application, and at the same time, renewable energy hydrogen production has become a key area for international large-scale energy enterprises to lay out hydrogen energy in the hydrogen energy security end. With the continuous improvement of environmental awareness, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are becoming an important factor in the future development and transformation of the automotive industry in the form of renewable energy, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles have begun to promote the construction of China national infrastructure, and move forward towards the goal of energy saving, emission reduction and sustainable development.

Mr. Li Junfang gave a report on the development status of new technologies and equipment for hydrogen refueling stations in China. Driven by the dual factors of strong downstream demand and reduced upstream costs, China's hydrogen refueling station market has expanded rapidly. China's hydrogen production was approximately 33 million tons in 2022, and the penetration rate of green hydrogen is still at a low level, which leaving considerable room for improvement. At the same time, in order to promote the widespread application of hydrogen energy and realize the commercialization of the hydrogen energy industry, central energy enterprises such as Sinopec and CNPC have accelerated their deployment of hydrogen refueling station market with the support of China national policies. The number of hydrogen refueling station construction in China has continued to increase. According to statistics, as of June 2023, there are 365 hydrogenation stations across the country, distributed in 30 provinces and cities. Overall, the development of domestic hydrogenation stations is uneven, and China still needs to expand the hydrogenation station network. Mr. Li Junfang emphasized that China's hydrogen refueling stations currently rely on imports for most of the core equipment and components required, which not only have high procurement costs, but also high maintenance costs in the later stages, limiting the development of hydrogen refueling stations. Dr. Xu Peng gave a report on China's liquid hydrogen production technology, equipment and development trends. Dr. Xu Peng pointed out: Liquid hydrogen is mainly used in the aerospace field, laboratory research, hydrogenation stations, petrochemical industry, electronics/metallurgy, energy reserves and other fields; It has developed rapidly starting from 2022 in China. Liquid hydrogen is the existing method with the highest effective hydrogen storage density, but the process of obtaining liquid hydrogen has a high technical threshold. When producing liquid hydrogen on a large scale, its energy consumption and efficiency must be considered. The liquid hydrogen technology route is suitable for large-scale storage and transportation. Enterprises also need to actively research and explore future large-scale production, storage, and transportation technologies of liquid hydrogen. The production capacity scale of liquid hydrogen plants is one of the key factors to determining the cost of liquid hydrogen. With China's "dual-carbon" goal, the clean energy industry is rapidly advancing, and as an important and efficient carrier of hydrogen energy, a "zero-carbon" energy source, liquid hydrogen will become an effective way to ensure the large-scale application of hydrogen energy.

Mr. Li Anran pointed out: Using the high energy density and low storage pressure characteristics of liquid hydrogen to realize the large-scale storage of hydrogen energy and the application of electric power storage, coupling and conversion based on this form of hydrogen energy is a necessary way to increase the proportion of new energy absorption, promote the economic use of hydrogen energy and accelerate the transformation of low-carbon economy and low-carbon society. Mr. Wang Chao gave a report on how green hydrogen can help the whole society to deeply decarbonize. The report discusses green hydrogen in the context of dual carbon, LONGi’s mission and new product introduction, and the impossible triangle of green hydrogen energy. Mr. Wang Chao pointed out that promoting green electricity and green hydrogen is a powerful weapon to achieve carbon neutrality and cope with climate change. He also gave a design idea for the equipment provided by the green ammonia integrated demonstration project and suggested that green hydrogen be included in energy management and the implementation of green Hydrogen "Top Runner" program. Mr. Wang Chao also said that the key constraint on the development of green hydrogen is cost. Compared with industrial by-product gray hydrogen, the price of green electricity and equipment costs in green hydrogen production are still higher, especially the cost of electricity. In the long run, the "photovoltaic +" system in which green hydrogen is deeply involved will be the key for the entire society to achieve deep decarburizations and sustainable development.

Mr. Zhu Ming reported on mainly three aspects: the hydrogen energy industry environment, the development status of vehicle-mounted liquid hydrogen bottles, and the key technologies of vehicle-mounted liquid hydrogen bottles. Mr. Zhu Ming said: Hydrogen storage technology is an important factor in the development of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles at this stage. Currently, there are three main hydrogen storage methods: high-pressure hydrogen storage, liquid hydrogen storage and hydride hydrogen storage. By the end of 2022, the total number of hydrogen vehicles will reach 12,682, accounting for about 20% of the world. The main vehicle equipment is high-pressure hydrogen storage cylinders. Compared with hydrogen vehicles, liquid hydrogen, as the fuel system of heavy-duty trucks, can not only achieve zero emissions, but also be comparable to traditional fuel vehicles in terms of endurance and power performance. Compared with high-pressure gaseous hydrogen storage and hydride hydrogen storage, the hydrogen storage quality and volumetric hydrogen storage energy density of liquid hydrogen storage are close to the practical target requirements. Currently, liquid hydrogen cylinders are equipped with a cushioning mechanism to cushion the vibration of the tank and a heat exchange structure between the inner liner and the tank to actively dissipate heat. In the future, solving the heat leakage problem during liquid hydrogen storage will be the main research direction to achieve large-scale application of liquid hydrogen.

Ms. Bao Junxiang, Executive Deputy General Manager of Zhongtai Hydrogen Technology Co., Ltd.

Ms. Bao Junxiang gave a report on a one-stop solution for producing fuel hydrogen and electronic-grade hydrogen from hydrogen-rich chemical exhaust gas. The report mainly discusses three aspects: the introduction of the domestic fuel hydrogen energy industry, the production of fuel/electronic hydrogen technology from chemical hydrogen-rich exhaust gas, and typical safety. Ms. Bao Junxiang said that as of the first half of 2023, a total of 1,089 hydrogenation stations have been built around the world, and China has built a total of 351 hydrogenation stations, accounting for 32.2% of the world, making it the country with the largest number of hydrogenation stations in the world. Ms. Bao Junxiang pointed out: Industrial by-product hydrogen source is currently a relatively cheap way to obtain hydrogen, and it is also the most important means of large-scale gas supply at this stage. The key to the integrated hydrogen purification and hydrogen liquefaction technology lies in the overall process design, the control of process trace impurities and the development and manufacture of key equipment. Liquid hydrogen refueling stations are expected to account for one third of the total number of hydrogen refueling stations by 2030.

Mr. Luo Xiaozhong gave a detailed introduction to the latest progress of fixed liquid hydrogen storage tanks. Mr. Luo Xiaozhong pointed out: Hydrogen energy has many functions. It can not only produce heat energy through combustion, produce mechanical work in heat engines, but also can be used as energy materials for fuel cells, or converted into solid hydrogen for use as structural materials. However, liquid hydrogen easily evaporates naturally during transportation and storage, resulting in the loss of liquid hydrogen. Fixed liquid hydrogen storage tanks reduce or even avoid the evaporation of liquid hydrogen through pressurization or condensation, which can reduce losses during liquid hydrogen transportation. Currently, a 400 m³ large liquid hydrogen storage tank has been developed. At the same time, the first civilian liquid hydrogen storage tank has successfully rolled off the production line, meeting the special technical requirements for fixed vacuum insulated liquid hydrogen pressure vessels, and has completed relevant testing.

The report discusses the basic characteristics of liquid hydrogen, the characteristics of liquid hydrogen transportation, the technical characteristics of liquid hydrogen tanks, and the development progress of liquid hydrogen tanks in China. Mr. Mao Haitao pointed out: With breakthroughs in hydrogen liquefaction technology and key equipment technologies, as well as the rapid development of the hydrogen energy terminal application industry, hydrogen energy storage and transportation has also become an important part of helping to build an efficient and economical hydrogen energy storage and transportation system, which add a powerful engine to accelerate the layout of the entire hydrogen energy industry chain. In the future, with the larger-scale production and application of hydrogen energy, the geographical mismatch between supply and demand will greatly increase the market demand for hydrogen energy storage and transportation equipment. The double-layer structure of 40-foot liquid hydrogen tanks is suitable for large-scale, long-distance multimodal transportation. Hydrogen energy transportation provides a better solution.

Mr. Zhang Bin suggested that: with the breakthrough of various hydrogen production technologies such as solar hydrogen production, the use of large amounts of hydrogen energy is bound to become a trend in the development of new energy sources, and Whether the risks of hydrogen refueling stations can be accepted by the public and how high their risk levels are have become hot topics studied by scientific research institutions in various countries. Currently, the main focus is on the quantitative risk analysis method model of hydrogen refueling stations, which is then calculated with examples. The quantitative risk conclusions are of great significance in guiding the decision-making for approval and public safety recognition of the construction of hydrogen refueling stations.

Mr. Li Yilin analyzed how sensors can help the safety of hydrogen energy. Mr. Li Yilin pointed out that hydrogen energy has the advantages of rapid replenishment, low energy weight density, convenient storage, and can effectively adjust the balance of supply and demand cycles, and has gradually attracted the attention of commercial vehicles. However, the nature of hydrogen itself makes it difficult to detect when leaking, and it is easy to cause safety accidents after accumulation. To this end, to better develop and utilize hydrogen energy, fast and highly sensitive hydrogen sensing technology is essential. At present, hydrogen sensing technology cannot meet the practical needs of hydrogen leakage monitoring in terms of response speed, usage range and safety. New hydrogen sensing technologies and methods are in urgent need of development.

In the context of the global response to climate change and accelerating energy transformation, hydrogen energy, as a clean energy source with low carbon, high calorific value and a wide range of sources, has become very popular. Major developed countries in the world have introduced policies to strongly support it. The "Mid- and Long-term Plan for the Development of Hydrogen Energy Industry (2021-2035)" issued by our country proposes to increase the hydrogen production capacity from renewable energy to 100,000 to 200,000 tons/year by 2025; Form a more completed hydrogen energy industry technology innovation system, clean energy hydrogen production and supply system by 2030; Form a hydrogen energy diversified application ecology by 2035, and the proportion of renewable energy hydrogen production in terminal energy consumption will be significantly increased, and other objectives. Facing the potential of hydrogen energy development, global multilateral hydrogen energy cooperation is also becoming increasingly prosperous.

 

According to statistics, by the end of 2022, 41 countries and regions around the world have announced hydrogen energy strategies, and the countries that have released national hydrogen energy strategies cover major economies with more than 80% of the world's GDP. China is the world's largest hydrogen producer, with an annual hydrogen production of approximately 33 million tons. At present, five fuel cell vehicle demonstration and application city clusters in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong, Hebei, and Henan have been approved, and a "1+N" policy system covering industrial planning, application demonstration, and scientific and technological support has been initially established.

 

In addition, since 2017 to date, 25 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions in China have issued a total of 337 special policies for the hydrogen energy and fuel cell industry. According to 18 provincial policies that released development planning goals, by 2025, the total planned industrial scale will reach 755 billion yuan, the total planned number of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles will be 101,500, and the total planned number of hydrogen refueling stations will be 994. China's hydrogen energy industry is bursting with vitality, and the industry is entering a new stage of development.

 

Mr. Pu Chungan, Executive Vice President of CIGIA, suggested that the government should provide policy support, and industry associations should take the lead and cooperate with domestic universities, enterprises and talent introduction policies to create a good innovation and R&D mechanism. Mr. Pu Chungan said that China’s liquefied hydrogen production, storage, transportation, filling and use can learn from the liquefied natural gas development model. If hydrogen liquefaction wants to occupy a place in the global hydrogen trade, the only possibility is to achieve cost reduction through worldwide exploration and improvement of the average facility size.

 

Mr. Pu Chungan emphasized: Due to its high energy density and low operation and maintenance costs, hydrogen energy can be used for energy storage for very short or very long periods of power supply. It is a rare form of energy storage that can store more than hundreds of gigawatts. He further explained: We can use surplus electricity from renewable energy to produce hydrogen on a large scale and seize the power-to-gas (P2G) technology market. It is believed that hydrogen energy storage should see large-scale development in the next five years, and China’s national subsidy policy is about to begin, which will bring great impetus to the development of hydrogen energy.

 

Mr. Pu Chungan said that China has built a number of fuel cell ships and conducted trials on rivers such as the Yangtze River and Pearl River. In the future, fuel cell ships are expected to be widely used in inland rivers and offshore areas. China's hydrogen energy development has broad prospects. Policy support and technological progress have provided a strong guarantee for the development of hydrogen energy. Market demand will continue to grow in the future. Although the development of hydrogen energy is currently facing some problems, governments and companies around the world are vigorously promoting the development of hydrogen energy technology. As a cleaner and more sustainable energy source, the potential of hydrogen is unlimited and can inspire us to explore more possibilities for the development of green energy in the future.
